What is a Video Converter?

A video converter is a tool that changes the format of a video file so that it can be played on different devices, uploaded to specific platforms, or edited in specialized software. Different devices (like iPhones, Androids, and Smart TVs) and websites (like YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter) have different requirements for video formats, codecs, and resolutions.

Common Video Formats Explained

Understanding the alphabet soup of video formats is crucial for getting the best quality and smallest file size:

  • MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14): The undisputed king of video formats. MP4 is universally supported by almost every device, browser, and social media platform in existence. If you are unsure what format to use, always choose MP4.
  • WEBM: Developed by Google, WebM is designed specifically for the web. It offers excellent compression and quality, making it perfect for embedding videos on websites without slowing down page load times.
  • MKV (Matroska): A highly flexible format often used for high-definition movies because it can hold multiple audio and subtitle tracks. However, it is not supported natively by many mobile devices or web browsers.
  • MOV: Developed by Apple, this format is heavily used in the Mac ecosystem and professional video editing software.

The Magic of FFmpeg in Your Browser

Historically, converting videos was a painful process. You either had to download sketchy, malware-ridden software to your computer, or you had to upload massive 500MB video files to a random website, wait an hour for it to process, and then download it again.

Our video converter uses WebAssembly to run a port of FFmpeg (the industry-standard open-source video processing engine) directly inside your web browser.

This means:

  1. No Uploads: Your massive video files are never sent over the internet, saving you gigabytes of data.
  2. Absolute Privacy: Because the processing happens on your local CPU, your personal videos remain strictly confidential.
  3. Speed: By removing the upload and download bottlenecks, the conversion starts instantly.

Frequently asked questions

Why is browser conversion slower than desktop apps?

WebAssembly runs single-threaded here for maximum compatibility, so it's slower than native FFmpeg. Short clips convert quickly; long videos can take several minutes.

Is there a file size limit?

Browsers limit WebAssembly memory to around 2 GB, so we recommend files under 500 MB for reliable results.

Are my videos uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your videos never leave your device, and nothing is stored or logged.
