What is Markdown?
Markdown is a lightweight markup language created by John Gruber in 2004. Its purpose is to allow people to write using an easy-to-read, easy-to-write plain text format, which then converts into structurally valid HTML.
Unlike writing raw HTML (which is cluttered with <p>, <strong>, and <h1> tags), Markdown relies on simple punctuation to format text. For example:
- Prefixing a line with
#creates a Heading. - Wrapping text in
**double asterisks**makes it bold. - Prefixing lines with
-creates a bulleted list.
Today, Markdown is the undisputed standard for writing technical documentation, README files on GitHub, blog posts, and forum comments (like on Reddit).
The Need for a Previewer
While Markdown is designed to be readable as plain text, it is often difficult to visualize exactly how complex elements—like nested lists, tables, blockquotes, and code syntax highlighting—will look once they are finally rendered into HTML by the target platform.
A Markdown Previewer solves this by offering a split-screen interface. You type your raw markdown on the left side, and the tool instantly compiles and renders the formatted HTML on the right side in real-time.
Advanced Markdown Flavors (GFM)
Basic Markdown is great, but it lacks support for modern web necessities like tables, task lists, and strikethroughs.
Because of this, various "flavors" of Markdown have been developed. The most popular is GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM). Our previewer fully supports GFM, meaning you can safely draft your open-source README.md files in our tool, and they will look exactly the same when you push them to GitHub.
Secure Local Rendering
Writing documentation often involves drafting proprietary company information, internal server IP addresses, or unreleased product specs.
If you use a cloud-based Markdown editor, every keystroke you type is sent over the internet and stored in a remote database. Our Markdown Previewer uses a local JavaScript parser. It converts your text to HTML instantly within your own browser's memory, ensuring your private drafts never leave your computer.

Frequently asked questions
What is GitHub-flavored Markdown?
GFM is a Markdown dialect used by GitHub that adds tables, task lists, strikethrough and autolinks to standard Markdown.
Is raw HTML allowed in the editor?
Yes, but it's sanitized before rendering, so scripts and unsafe attributes are removed.
Are my documents uploaded to a server?
No. All processing happens locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your documents never leave your device, and nothing is stored or logged.
