What is HTML Formatting?
HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the standard markup language used to structure documents on the World Wide Web. As you write or generate HTML, it is very common for the code to become messy, unorganized, or entirely condensed into a single line (known as "minified" HTML).
HTML Formatting (or "beautifying") is the process of parsing raw HTML code and rewriting it with consistent indentation, proper line breaks, and aligned tags. This does not change how the website looks in the browser, but it drastically changes how easy the code is for a human developer to read and maintain.
Why You Need an HTML Formatter
When working on large web projects, you will frequently copy and paste snippets from documentation, templates, or AI generators. This often results in a chaotic mix of tabs, spaces, and misaligned nested elements (like a <div> inside a <div> inside a <section>).
A good HTML formatter solves three major problems:
- Readability: By applying a strict 2-space or 4-space indentation rule to nested tags, developers can instantly see the parent-child relationships of the DOM (Document Object Model).
- Debugging: When an HTML layout breaks because of a missing closing
</div>tag, finding that missing tag in unformatted code is nearly impossible. A formatter aligns the opening and closing tags, making missing tags obvious. - Minification Reversal: If you need to inspect the source code of a production website, the HTML is almost certainly minified to save bandwidth. Running it through a beautifier makes it readable again.
Local Processing for Privacy
Many online HTML formatters work by taking your code, sending it to a remote server, formatting it, and sending it back. If you are formatting a proprietary email template or a page with sensitive internal data, you are leaking that information to a third party.
Our HTML Formatter runs completely client-side. We use a locally running parser (like Prettier) that executes inside your web browser's memory. Your code is instantly formatted using your own CPU, and the text never leaves your computer.
How to use the HTML Formatter
- 1
Paste HTML or drop an .html file into the input panel.
- 2
Choose Format to beautify or Minify to compress.
- 3
Copy the output or download it as an .html file.

Frequently asked questions
Will formatting change how my page renders?
Formatting only changes indentation and line breaks. In rare cases whitespace between inline elements can affect layout; use the 'strict' whitespace option to avoid that.
Does it format embedded CSS and JavaScript?
Yes. Content inside <style> and <script> tags is formatted with the matching Prettier parser.
Are my HTML files uploaded to a server?
No. All processing happens locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your HTML files never leave your device, and nothing is stored or logged.
