What is a QR Code?

A QR (Quick Response) Code is a type of two-dimensional matrix barcode that was originally invented in 1994 for the Japanese automotive industry. Unlike traditional 1D barcodes that only hold information horizontally, QR codes store data both vertically and horizontally, allowing them to hold significantly more information.

In the modern smartphone era, QR codes have become the bridge between the physical and digital worlds. A user can simply point their camera at a code printed on a poster, and instantly be transported to a website, Wi-Fi network, or payment portal.

Types of QR Codes

When generating a QR code, you can encode various types of data formats. Modern smartphone cameras automatically recognize the data type and trigger the appropriate action:

  • URL/Website: The most common type. Scanning it prompts the user to open their web browser to the specified link.
  • Wi-Fi Network: Encodes the network name (SSID), password, and encryption type. Scanning it instantly connects the user to the Wi-Fi without them having to type a complex password.
  • VCard (Contact Info): Encodes a digital business card (name, phone number, email, company). Scanning it prompts the user to save a new contact to their phonebook.
  • Email or SMS: Encodes an email address or phone number, along with a pre-written subject and message body.

Static vs. Dynamic QR Codes

It is important to understand the difference between static and dynamic codes before you print 10,000 business cards:

  • Static QR Codes: The data is permanently hardcoded directly into the visual pattern of the code. Once printed, you can never change where it goes. Because they contain the raw data, they do not require an active internet connection to be scanned (e.g., a static Wi-Fi code). Our tool generates purely static QR codes.
  • Dynamic QR Codes: The visual pattern contains a short URL that redirects to your actual destination. This allows you to log into a dashboard and change the destination later, even after the code is printed. However, if the redirect server goes down, the QR code breaks.

Customizing Your QR Code

While standard QR codes are black and white squares, they feature a high level of "error correction." This mathematical redundancy means that up to 30% of the code can be damaged, covered, or modified, and it will still scan perfectly.

This error correction is what allows you to customize QR codes. You can safely change the foreground color, round the edges of the squares, or even slap your company logo right in the dead center of the code, and modern scanners will still read it instantly. Our QR Code Generator allows you to customize colors and error correction levels entirely in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Do these QR codes expire?

No. They're static QR codes that encode your content directly, so they work as long as the content (for example, your URL) is valid.

What error correction level should I choose?

Medium works for most uses. Choose High if the code may be printed small, damaged, or overlaid with a logo.

Are my QR code contents uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your QR code contents never leave your device, and nothing is stored or logged.
